While serving time, Moose formed an unlikely friendship with a correctional officer. When the officer’s life was cut short unexpectedly, Moose set about running an ultra-marathon inside the prison yard raising over $7,000 for the officer’s family.
This outward act of dedication made local headlines. But the deeper transformation had been quietly taking root in Moose’s heart for months and years before, as he returned week after week to Freedom Within’s healing circles.
Today Moose has been reunited with his family and has been building a new life rooted in authenticity and purpose. He shares, “This new chapter of my life isn’t just about moving forward; it’s about moving forward as me.” Moose has been making up for lost time with his kids and has been hard at work as a ______ in construction. In Month, he was even named Employee of the Month!

“Prison doesn’t change nobody. You got to go look at yourself in the mirror and make that change yourself.”
While serving time in prison, Rob Gutierrez encountered Freedom Within Project and began the difficult work of confronting the truth about himself – the same kind of honesty boxing later demanded from him in the ring.
Today Rob “The Real Banditos” is undefeated as a professional boxer with a 3-0 record and proudly wears the Freedom Within Project logo on his uniform.
But for Rob, success isn’t about applause or trophies. It’s the integrity you carry when no one is watching. Rob recently shared this and other powerful lessons he’s learned during his journey on the Roots of Ambition podcast

After spending more than 21 years, 9 days, and 8 hours in prison, Zakee returned home determined to help others rebuild their lives.
Today he works for a re-entry nonprofit called GRIP, where he supports returning citizens through the critical first months after release as they search for employment, locate housing, and work towards educational goals.
In a recent conversation with Freedom Within’s Executive Director Malcolm Dydo, Zakee shared a powerful personal perspective on how true public safety is rooted not in punishment, but in the inner work of reflection, accountability, and healing.
